Day 89 – 91 – Intro to Geometry and Playing Kahoot!

This week we started our introduction to Geometry.  We focused yesterday on points, lines, and planes which are the building blocks of geometric concepts.   Today was a look into angles.  We used the Smartboard to explore two rays joining together to make an angle.  I refreshed their knowledge of the different types of angles (obtuse, straight, right, and acute).   Supplementary angles and Complementary angles were a new concept, and so we played around with those a bit.

Kahoot Time!

wpid-20140122_100804.jpgKahoot is a game-based classroom response system that is easy to use and VERY FUN (and competitive!) for the students.  It is very similar to Socrative, but in a game-friendly format.Screen Shot 2014-01-22 at 8.17.28 PM

After setting up a free account, I created a quiz that the students would try during class.  I used it for today’s lesson, so the quiz involved all angle related questions.  I wanted to use this as just a quick assessment, so I came up with 7 questions. Kahoot allows the user to drag in pictures, so I could even ask a question like, “Given the picture, what is the measure of angle X?”imageUsing their iPad or another device, students log in to the game using a unique game pin. They then enter a nickname (I had them just do first name, last initial—afraid of what I might get from middle schoolers otherwise!).  This name shows up on the Smartboard screen and gives a count of how many “players” are in the room.

Then the fun starts…The first question pops up and up to 4 choices (that I created) are displayed below it.   Each question has a time limit, which I am able to control when creating the quiz.

The goal is for students to be the fastest, but also accurate.  In doing so, they earn points, called Kahoots!


Screen Shot 2013-11-04 at 10.31.19 AMAfter each question, the results are shown–(how many players chose choice 1, how many chose choice 2, etc.)  Names are never given at this point, so it is never known who may have gotten a question wrong.  The scoreboard is also displayed after each round on the Smartboard, but it only shows the top 5 scorers.

The students get SO into this game! The music during each question adds to the intensity of the competition.  I love seeing them engaged!

Kahoot is a fun assessment tool that I plan to try again with different lessons.  It gives me a quick glance at how the students are doing and, because it is paused after each question, it can also can really lead into some great discussion.
