Day 21 – Multiplying and Dividing Integers

ImageI always look through Smart Exchange before I set up my own Smart Board lesson.  For this particular lesson, I instead came across a neat video that compared multiplying and dividing integers to a husband and wife in a marriage!  The kids thought it was very funny.  Happy wife and Happy husband = good marriage (duh!)  Happy wife and Grouchy husband = bad marriage (duh!).  This was the tricky one — Grouchy wife and Grouchy husband = Good marriage (everyone’s grouchy so everyone’s happy!?)  Silly, but it stuck.  Obviously we changed the “happy”, “grouchy” and “good”, “bad” to “positive” and “negative”.  After practicing lots of problems, they definitely got it.  What inevitably happens, though, is when they start to use this rule for adding and subtracting. How to get that in their heads…Image
