Well Day 1 is done! The first day is always exciting. All the students come to school so eager and ready to learn. I have a great group of 6th and 7th graders this year. I’m always so pleased at how polite and respectful they are! (“Thank you” from most students at the end of class!) Rather than starting the year with a syllabus or even class expectations, I wanted my students to interact and collaborate with one another. I had them work in groups of 3 to 4 to answer the question “What is Math?” Their answers would fill up our classroom Graffiti Wall. This question, “What is Math”, is not an easy one to answer. After several responses from the class, I showed them other Math definitions, my favorites of which are “Mathematics is the foundation of logic” and “Mathematics is a language”. Both these statements led a good class discussion, with lots of response. I was pleased with how the students worked together and how the rest of class went.

Tomorrow will be syllabus and class expectations:)
